Pennslyvania Official says American Rescue Plan Delivers “Life-Altering Savings”
The American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, also called the COVID-19 Stimulus Package or American Rescue Plan, is a $1.9 trillion economic stimulus bill passed by the 117th United States Congress.
Pennsylvania is estimated to receive $270 million dollars that will lower the costs of health insurance for many people who already have coverage, and expand coverage for many who have not been able to afford health insurance.
“These new provisions result in significant impacts, including huge, potentially life-altering savings for Pennsylvanians seeking individual market coverage.”
~ Alison Beam PA Secretary of Health
Because of the American Rescue Plan, the deadline, or open season, for buying individual and family coverage has been extended to Aug. 15.
About 317,000 people in Pennsylvania are covered by Obamacare. Most of those with individual coverage will see savings of about $87 per month and those with family coverage will savings of about $118 per month, state Insurance Commissioner Jessica Altman said.
Another result of the American Rescue Plan, state officials said, is that no one buying coverage will have to pay more than 8.5% of their income toward health insurance premiums if they chose what’s called a “benchmark” plan. In the past, people with incomes above a certain level weren’t eligible for federal subsidies to offset their premiums and keep them below 8.5%.
“Just saying the word ‘savings’ does not do these provisions justice, It’s not just a one-off discount or a coupon. It’s a complete transformation in the way people pay for health insurance.”
~ Jessica Altman, Pennsylvania Insurance Commisioner
